I have previously explained that what is truly necessary to fundamentally control a dog’s nuisance barking is the “Direct Approach”—directly cueing a behavior that is desirable to humans.
To conclude, let me ask you a very important question to measure the “quality” of your dog’s training:
“Does your cue for ‘Sit’ actually reach your dog on a heavily crowded platform at Shinjuku Station?”
If your honest thought was, “It works inside the house, but there’s absolutely no way it would work in a place like that,” then that is your answer.
A cue that works only inside the house—a “difficulty level zero” environment with zero distractions and zero stimuli—is not real training. The exact moment the intercom rings and people walk past the window, the dog’s brain is in a state of intense affective/impulsive arousal, mimicking the chaos of that heavily crowded Shinjuku Station.
Even if your dog can sit 100 times in a quiet room, a cue that cannot be used even once during a state of high excitement is completely useless as a solution for nuisance barking.
What we must strive for is “true cue quality”—where the owner’s voice instantly penetrates the dog’s brain, no matter how excited they are.
