【第4回】犬の無駄吠え

なぜ「街角の家の犬」は、あんなに吠えるのか？

少し前まで犬を外で繋いで飼うのが主流だった頃、どこの街にも「あそこの角の家の犬はうるさい、よく吠える」という有名な犬がいたものです。
実は、室内飼いが増えた現代の家の中でも、これと全く同じ現象が起きています。

なぜ、街角の家の犬はあんなに激しく吠え癖がついてしまうのでしょうか？
その理由は、犬の持つ「テリトリー（縄張り）を守りたい」という本能にあります。

通りに面した家は、犬にとって自分の縄張りのすぐ目の前を不特定多数の人間が毎日通り過ぎる環境です。
家という大切な縄張りに向かって見知らぬ人が近づいてくると、犬は強い警戒心や恐怖心から、「あっちへ行け！」と必死に吠え立てます。

すると、通りを歩いている通行人はただの通行人ですから、犬が吠えようが吠えまいが、そのまま通り過ぎて（去って）いきます。
しかし、人間のこの当たり前の行動が、犬の頭の中で「とんでもない誤解」を生むトリガーになってしまうのです。

Why Does “The Dog at the Street Corner” Bark So Much?(Click Here): Until quite recently, when keeping dogs tied up outside was the norm, every neighborhood had that one famous dog: “The dog at that corner house is so loud; it barks all the time.” In fact, even in modern homes where indoor dog ownership has increased, the exact same phenomenon is occurring. Why do dogs at street corners develop such an intense habit of barking? The reason lies in a dog’s natural instinct to protect its territory. A house facing the street creates an environment where, from the dog’s perspective, an unspecified number of strangers pass right in front of its territory every single day. When a stranger approaches their precious home—their territory—dogs frantically bark, shouting “Go away!” out of deep alertness and fear. When they do, the people walking down the street are just pedestrians, so they simply keep walking and leave, regardless of whether the dog barks or not. However, this completely normal human behavior becomes the trigger that creates a “massive misunderstanding” inside the dog’s mind.
